The Blue Lagoon Packing List: The Essentials

Entrance Ticket

Although you do not have to print your entrance ticket, be sure you have the confirmation/order number with you when you arrive. No ticket or no reservation verification, no entry!

Swimsuit

You’ll need something to wear into the water as nudity is not permissible inside the Blue Lagoon. That being said, if your culture, religion, or inhibitions prohibit you from wearing a traditional swimsuit and you need something more conservative or modest, you may wear clothing that covers your body such as t-shirts, shorts, or burkinis.

Have you been avoiding swimsuit shopping like the plague? Does the idea of trying on swimwear under the (horribly unflattering) florescent bulbs of your local department store make you instantly start sweating? It’s time to jump on the online shopping bandwagon, my friend. This is what I have been doing for the past ten years or so. I really don’t need the negativity of those stores’ mirrors or their awful lighting highlighting the parts of my body I don’t love. Trying on swimsuits from home is my jam these days.

You’re not going to be swimming laps at the Blue Lagoon. Instead, your experience will consist of floating and leisurely walking within the water. Therefore, there’s no need for “performance suits.” Find something in which you feel confident and that will be hassle-free. (There is nothing worse that constantly having to adjust your suit. No one has time for that!)

I have included a few options here that I personally think would make for great Blue Lagoon photos while also providing comfort and ease. There is something about a white suit in that intense blue water that will really make your photos stand out. Not a fan of white (or don’t have the skin tone for it, like me)? You do you. Choose whatever color you love. After all, it’s about the experience, not just the photo opp.

One Piece Swimsuits

If you’re looking for comfort and coverage, one piece swimsuits are a natural choice. There are so many options out there but here are a few I think would look amazing on any body type. And be sure to check out this suit, named the #1 most flattering suit for all body-types by Elle magazine.

Two Piece Swimsuits

The Blue Lagoon is the perfect time to wear a bikini, even if you’ve never worn one before. Here’s why: you’ll be waist-deep in water for most of your experience and because of the high silica content, the water is opaque. This means no one will see the imperfections you’re so worried about hiding. So go on, girl…get yourself a bikini to rock at the Blue Lagoon!

DD+ Swimwear

When you have a larger chest, finding swimwear can be frustrating! You need to buy bra-sized swimsuits; avoid general sizes like “large” or “small.” These general sizes are not going to do what you need them to do. While bra-sized suits tend to be pricier as your cup size increases (because they are more highly engineered for increased support), you’ll find that they will give you the confidence you need to finally feel comfortable in a swimsuit (or as close to comfortable as one can feel in swimwear). Check out the Bare Necessities website or the Figleaves website. Some of my favorite brands from these sites can also be found on Amazon, although the selection isn’t as large.

Sandals/Flip Flops

Essential for walking around the locker room and out to the lagoon, sandals and flip flops should definitely make their way into your Blue Lagoon bag. But remember, you’re going to be leaving your footwear unlocked, along with all of the other visitors’ shoes, towels, and robes. Therefore, wearing your $400 designer sandals is probably not a great idea here. Just purchase some el cheapo rubber sandals and call it a day.

Hair Clips and Swim Caps

You’re going to want to put your hair up and out of the Blue Lagoon’s water. Due to its high mineral content, your hair will end up being unmanageable, dry, frizzy, and dull if you allow it to be exposed to the water. Hint: You’ll have to shower before entering the Blue Lagoon so soak your hair in the shower, load it up with their provided conditioner and then pile it up on your head (without rinsing the conditioner) until you’re ready to leave. If you prefer to not get your hair wet, that is okay too. But why not give your hair a deep conditioning treatment while you’re relaxing the rest of your body?

Waterproof Camera/Phone Case

I don’t know too many people who wouldn’t want a photo of themselves in the famed Blue Lagoon. But who wants to have to hold their arms out of the water the entire time to keep their camera or phone dry? Or worse yet, what if you drop your phone or camera into the water? (Spoiler: All that steam coming off the water is going to get your camera or phone wet anyway, even if you don’t drop it in the water!)

The solution is to arm yourself with either a waterproof camera or to protect your phone with a waterproof case. It’s just not worth the risk of damaging your electronics. You’ll find that most people will have something waterproof with them if they are taking pictures or videos. We personally used our GoPro but many people had their waterproof phone cases with them and they seemed to do the job just fine.

Sunglasses

There are no shaded areas at the Blue Lagoon (unless you sit underneath one of the footbridges) so unless you visit on a rainy or very cloudy day, you’ll want to have sunglasses with you. Sunglasses that offer UV protection are best.

Sunscreen

I know it seems ridiculous that you will need sunscreen in Iceland because we usually associate sunscreen with the beaches of the Caribbean or other tropical and hot locations. But if you’re at the Blue Lagoon on a partly sunny or sunny day, you risk getting an Icelandic sunburn. The sun will be reflecting off of the water (just like anywhere else) so protect yourself appropriately. I’m not a dermatologist but I am very fair-skinned so I’ve done some research on sunscreen. Be sure you’re choosing something that provides UVA and UVB protection and that is waterproof. There are natural and eco-friendly sunscreens available now as well as the “old standbys.”

Make-Up, Toiletries, and Hair Products

If you have plans after the Blue Lagoon and need to be presentable, you should pack travel-sized amounts of your daily products. (Don’t forget the deodorant, especially if you’re getting back on a plane!)

There are hair dryers available at the Blue Lagoon but you may need to wait if multiple people are styling their hair at the same time. If you choose to bring your own dryer or straightener, make sure they are dual voltage and be sure to pack an outlet adapter.

Travel Bag

You’ll need something to carry all of your items into the Blue Lagoon and while you could absolutely just pack them in an old gym bag, why not treat yourself to a new travel bag? If you’re visiting while on an extended airport layover or stopping there before your flight home, just pack your carry on bag with all of your Blue Lagoon essentials.

What Not to Bring

Cash or Cards: Leave your cash and cards in your locker. You will be given an electronic bracelet as your form of payment for anything on property. However, you will need your cards or cash to settle your bill upon leaving.

Outside Food and Beverages: You are not permitted to carry-in your own food and drinks so leave those behind. (If you’re bringing your carry on with you and have snacks packed away inside, that is okay. You just cannot eat those snacks at the Blue Lagoon.

Body Wash, Shampoo, Conditioner: The Blue Lagoon provides all of these items free of charge so don’t waste the space in your bag bringing your own.

Hairdryer: The Blue Lagoon has hair dryers available for its guests to use so it is not necessary to pack your own.

Floaties: Children are required to wear inflatable floaties in the Blue Lagoon. These will be provided at check-in.
